If Nvidia DSR is not available to you, eg, because you have an Optimus laptop, You can create a higher resolution with CRU (you must restart the graphics after this) and downscale it using Intel's Graphic Command Centre (I'm using the beta version, I'm not sure if that's necessary). On my new 24" 1080p monitor the best results I've found so far from experimentation are 2560x1440 with Windows scaling at 125%.
